- We show that a common pattern in dried colloidal films (e.g. paints/coatings) is a mechanical instability and demonstrate how to eliminate it, to produce more uniform films. Highlighted by the publisher as an Editor’s Suggestion and accompanied by editorial synopsis at Physics (https://physics.aps.org/synopsis-for/10.1103/PhysRevLett.115.088302), this work was also covered by popular science magazines (“Drying zigzags” (Trocknen im Zickzack), Spektrum, Oct. 2015; “Drying chevrons” (Chevrons de séchage), La Recherche, Oct. 2015) and was the feature of invited talks at international conferences (Dynamics Days US, Rayleigh, 2016; Drying Days, Toulouse, 2017) and universities (Bordeaux; Leeds).
