- Taking five years to research and write, this book draws on some ex-Soviet records and all known Polish ones, many chaotic and uncatalogued and their archivists uncooperative. The project entailed the very difficult task of reconstructing how Communist Party structures influenced government decision-making. The book analyses not just Gomulka’s life but also the development of Polish Communism from the 1930s to the 1970s, challenging standard interpretations of Gomulka’s role. The multiplicity of archives consulted has made possible an original new analysis, providing a major contribution to an historical understanding of Communism in Europe.
