- Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state process that gives low defect population and low residual stress and a relatively high fatigue strength. Its application to small diameter aluminium alloy tubing is important for ground transportation but design techniques for this are not yet available. This paper is the first to demonstrate a bespoke FSW system for making high efficiency FS joints in small diameter tube and that an existing fatigue design approach can be used for the prediction of fatigue lives for such tubes under tension, torsion and multiaxial tension-torsion loading conditions.
