- The Discursive Construction of Blame is a book-length treatment of the language of public inquiries. It required the synthesis of a huge variety of data on public inquiries – including: parliamentary debates in the establishment of inquiries, written evidence submitted to the inquiries, transcripts of oral evidence at inquiries and the final written reports produced at the conclusion of inquiries. In total approximately 15 million words were analysed, utilising a range of appropriate linguistic and discourse analytic techniques. The research effort was sustained – taking just over three years from conception to completion.
