- This monograph is the first in-depth account of the Somali secessionist war in northern Kenya, Kenyan counterinsurgency measures, and their impact on the local population. This extended piece of research is based on the collection and analysis of a large body of material, including primary archival sources and 46 interviews with contemporary witnesses, many of whom were difficult to access. In showing that local and individual considerations were paramount in determining support either for secession or for the government, Whittaker provides critical insights into everyday experiences of insurgency and counterinsurgency, which resulted from a lengthy period of data collection.
