- This biography of a notable American Supreme Court Justice represents sustained research effort mainly although not exclusively in the Harvard collection of the Holmes’ papers. Although not especially difficult to access in themselves, working on American archival material from the UK presents its own challenges. The Holmes’ paper are voluminous, as is much of the supporting material on American legal history. Finally, the biography adopts an original approach to Holmes, linking his Civil War and legal experiences in ways intended to shed new light on many of the decisions he made, or failed to make, when on the Supreme Court.
