- Describes the development and community building process for Bela, our open-source hardware platform for audio/sensor processing which achieves lower latency and better timing precision than existing tools. In 2016, Bela completed a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising £55k (1100% of goal) from 530 backers. It then launched a spinout company, Augmented Instruments Ltd, with >£325k consumer sales, commercial consultancy, and Innovate UK grants (132422, 133535) totalling £130k fEC. Bela adopted for teaching in 20+ universities spanning Europe, North America and Australia (https://bela.io/education), plus companies and artists worldwide and generates significant press attention (http://instrumentslab.org/press/). CHI is the top HCI conference, 20-25% acceptance.
