- Most research into motivation in software engineering has confused motivation and satisfaction. This paper presents the first theoretical model to describe and detail the relationship between these two concepts in this context. The model synthesises significant empirical data from five case studies, and previous models of motivation. Published in the premier journal IEEE TSE, this paper is the latest output in our programme of research (which started in 2006) that focuses on motivation in software engineering. This programme has inspired researchers in Brazil and Europe, and underpinned the NCSC-funded project Motivating Jenny (motivatingjenny.org).
