- This Cambridge Companion volume provides a comprehensive overview of current approaches to Lyrical Ballads, enabling readers to find fresh ways of understanding and responding to this key work of British Romanticism. It is the first new edited collection of critical essays on Lyrical Ballads for nineteen years. Bushell was invited to be sole editor of this Companion volume by Cambridge University Press. She took sole responsibility for all aspects of the volume including a rationale for the approach taken (treating all three key editions as parts of one whole) structure and shape of the contents, choice of authors, subject of chapters and preparation of all materials. In other words the vision, conception and design of the whole volume were entirely those of the editor. The essays in the volume are wide-ranging and authoritative. Bushell’s introduction explores how the Preface to the second edition (1800) became a potent manifesto for the Romantic movement. Her opening chapter on the reception of Lyrical Ballads offers a fresh reading of the influence of the work through Jauss’s reception theory to establish its on-going popularity and capacity for re-invention.
