- According to the Second Vatican Council lay people in the Roman Catholic Church have a full apostolic role in proclaiming the Gospel. This article argues that lay Catholics therefore have the right and the duty to theological training. Although enshrined in Church doctrine from earliest times, Church leaders have always been suspicious of this teaching. Better knowledge of church doctrine leads to greater theological diversity, which is perceived as a potential threat to unity. But the article finds that this suspicion may be self-defeating as widespread theological literacy among Christians is crucial for the success of the Church today.
