- This account of the research process leading to the special issue of 'Contemporary Theatre Review', including Lavender’s single-authored article, has been drafted jointly by the co-editors.
‘Encountering the Digital in Performance: Deployment | Engagement | Trace’ was initiated and co-edited by Chatzichristodoulou, Lavender and Nedelkopoulou. The issue arose from proceedings of the Theatre and Performance Research Association (TaPRA) Working Group on Performance and New Technologies, which was started by Lavender and later led by Nedelkopoulou and Chatzichristodoulou. It was realised through targeted commissions among leading researchers and practitioners in the field. The co-editors collaboratively designed a conceptual framework for critiquing and analysing theatre and performance in digital culture, in order to examine how recent and emergent changes in digitally-enabled practices affect the ways we make, participate in, and think of performance. The framework pivoted around three main concepts—‘Deployment’, ‘Engagement’ and ‘Trace’—proposed by the co-editors as a novel triad by which to investigate our encounters with performance through digital culture. The co-editors commissioned, guided and edited six original research articles (including an article by each of the co-editors) addressing new digital/performance formations, plus three practice-research documents addressing situated explorations. Together, the contributions coalesced under the main conceptual strands of the special issue, illuminating them in different ways and addressing previously untheorized developments.
Lavender authored the ‘Preamble’ (pp. 309-310), outlining the co-editors’ conceptualisation of the special issue and its discursive organisation around notions of ‘encounter’ and the triad indicated above. His individual research article goes on to explore Engagement in particular, in the context of the history, mediality and affordances of theatre on and through the Internet. It considers relations between these two media, and issues of time and space with regard to the Internet’s transmediality, presenting a novel case concerning the temporality of performance online.
