This JAIR paper demonstrated the potential of portfolio-based approaches to automated planning, and paved the road to their exploitation. The paper centres on a comprehensive description of the authors’ PbP portfolio planning method. PbP and PbP2 proved hugely influential - the papers describing the PbP family have over 100 GS cites. For example, the PbP approach is featured in Kerschke et al’s survey paper https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Automated-Algorithm-Selection%3A-Survey-and-Kerschke-Hoos/be1fa570187f20c03b97fa0e9b09f44e73eb33c2 and has influenced winning systems of recent International Planning Competitions such as the IBaCoP planner https://www.jair.org/index.php/jair/article/view/11020/26182.
