- Curry’s The Man-Not effectively effectively put the entire field of black male studies on the map. Drawing on ideas from philosophy, history and sociology, the book is impressive not only for its breadth of analysis and highly interdisciplinary approach and originality. Developing such a novel and heterodox theory is especially daunting, since the theorist lacks the usual intellectual “scaffolding” available to someone working more within accepted traditions. The work drew support from numerous events and institutions, e.g. the Caribbean Philosophy Association, Philosophy Born of Struggle and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
