- Contested Identities in Costa Rica is a monograph based on seven years research into Costa Rican national identity, literature, and film from the 1890s-2016 that included extended periods of fieldwork in the country. It analyses interviews, historical and sociological sources, one novel, four short stories, and four films in-depth. These sources are only available in Costa Rica and provide insight into local cultural patterns and phenomena, while the original interviews conducted as part of the research phase of this project took place over the course of two years and were made into a documentary which is referenced in the monograph.
