- Lie Machines is a book length manuscript published by Yale University Press in 2020. We know people see misinformation in their social media—but how do we know that there is a path of influence? Knowing this is key to addressing the problem, either with public policy or in our own individual social media habits. Lie Machines is grounded in complex, multimethod evidence collected over several years, from countries around the world: fieldwork in Brazil and Russia (2012-2017); analysis of 65 interviews with the staff of misinformation operations (2015-2020); and public opinion data from elections in the US and UK (2016-2019).
