- The research undertaken to gather research materials required visits to hundreds of places of worship across Wales over a period of ten years, visiting and photographing thousands of windows that were often difficult to access and nearly all of which was unrecorded in any form, except for very brief listings in architectural guides and obscure private publications. Further archival research (much of which was uncatalogued) was necessary to establish basic information such as dates and attribution. The narrative concerning most of the twentieth century material was complex as no parallel studies in Europe covered the same period in depth.
