- This paper represents international consensus on the way forward for Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) designed to harmonize environmental monitoring worldwide. Principles by which research infrastructures and observing systems should interoperate were derived from this work and delineated in the Bari Manifesto (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoinf.2018.11.003) adopted by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON - https://geobon.org/ebvs/what-are-ebvs/). The work directly influenced research on coastal ecosystems (https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.1682), tropical forest and savannah monitoring (https://doi.org/10.3390/rs9101059; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2018.06.044) and bioinformatics (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2017.12.024; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2017.12.024). In partnership with Microsoft’s AI for Earth program, three paper authors have launched a US$1 million grant program to support creation of EBVs (https://geobon.org/geo-bon-microsoft-ebvs-on-the-cloud/)
