- This paper stems from an international collaboration including University of Sheffield and the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Italy), supported by NC3R (133629), EU project CHIC (FP7, 134409) and EPSRC (EP/K03877X/1). The study provides new insights into the limitations of a widely adopted method for indirectly assessing the mechanical properties of bone tissue.
The paper is significant because it offers reference values (principal stresses and displacements) for assessing the reliability in numerical predictions of bone tissue mechanics; this is a key factor for complex nonlinear numerical models adopted for diagnosis and prognosis of pathologies involving bone fragility such as osteoporosis.
