- This 280 page book (c. 80,000 words) was researched and written over a period of five years. Archival work was carried out at the Bodleian Library (Oxford), the British Library, Cambridge University Library, the Courtauld Institute Library, Lewis Walpole Library (Yale), National Archives and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Extensive picture research resulted in the inclusion of over 60 images. Extensive reading in art history and visual culture, social and cultural history, queer studies and the history of sexuality enabled the development of the book’s pioneering approach to its subject.
