- This is the first major interdisciplinary study of domestic architecture and material life in England’s ‘second city’ during the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, across a vitally important period of socio-economic transformation. It surveys over 200 historic buildings and major archaeological excavations, bringing together these sources of evidence for the first time in a comprehensive survey which uses this evidence to critically explore themes of identity, power and domesticity across the period. In scale it is based on over 10 years data collection and archival research, and is 110,000 words in length with 100+ illustrations.
