- Damage of asphalt structure due to interlayer debonding is responsible for degradation and collapse of airport pavements and can cause significant expenditure and even life-threatening incidents. This paper introduces a wholly new and innovative approach to detect the interlayer debonding phenomenon at an early-stage which occurs in the shallow region of pavement structure using a multi-static GPR system. This paper presents the results of a NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, Japan) funded project. The tool developed in this work is generic with applications in the condition assessment of infrastructure, hence with a significant and far-reaching global impact.
