- This output, on a neglected topic (Catholicism, youth and childhood in post-Reformation England) is based on nearly five years of intensive research, combining evidence of lived experiences and conceptual discourse. It analyses the construction of early modern religious identity, centred on the spiritual value of autonomy in young people, to reveal the post-Reformation State’s involvement in children’s religious upbringing. Research materials include records of the Court of Wards, the Responsa Scholarum of the English College (Rome), the Liber Primi Examinis (Valladolid), and other primary sources (including hagiography, martyrology, correspondence, educational drama, intelligence reports, and judicial records) from multiple archives.
