- This paper details the development of a complete isogeometric continuum shell element. A key innovation is the use of a B-spline to represent the through-the-thickness behaviour. This is extremely versatile, since it allows straightforward incorporation, in a single analysis, of higher-order shear theories, but also a consistent treatment of different stiffnesses in layered shells, and delamination. The paper was the second most-downloaded paper three months after publication. Research funded through the FP7 project MAAXIMUS, led by Airbus. The non-isogeometric version of the element was implemented in a special version of the commercial software ABAQUS, paid by Airbus.
