- Research funded by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA; now FERA), grant reference AW0933, aimed at influencing EU legislation apropos the welfare of livestock transported in small trailers by formulating a comprehensive predictive CFD model. The work initiated different methodologies for quantifying passive ventilation, the creation of thermal comfort indices and has been instrumental in influencing the attitudes of livestock hauliers towards animal welfare, occupational health and transport risk factors. Due to reorganisation, the project contacts at DEFRA have moved on or left the organisation; further details relating to the work potentially available from C.A.Gilkeson@leeds.ac.uk.
