- The paper proposes complex nanoscale mechanisms that lead to clinical micro-separation stripe wear in ceramic-on-ceramic hip prostheses that are used in 40% of patients under 65 years of age. Hip ‘micro-separation’ refers to the translation of the joint centres caused by laxity in soft tissues following surgery that leads to edge contacts, elevated stress levels and wear. Analysis and modelling methodologies developed through in-vitro studies have been successfully translated to improved ceramic devices (Biolox Delta, email on request), and a new ISO hip testing standard ISO 14242-4:2018 that all new devices around the world must adhere to.
