- Voice-controlled technologies such as ‘smart speakers’ are new consumer technologies, but little is understood about their use and impact in the home. This paper offers the first empirical insight, developing a novel approach to its longitudinal study, and reveals strengths and deficiencies in the current design of smart speakers with respect to how they are used. Through this, the paper identifies directions for technological innovation. The timeliness and significance of this work was well received at ACM CHI through the recognition of a Best Paper award.
