- This 91,000-word monograph challenges art historical hierarchies and distinctions between the fine and decorative arts, by uncovering the ways in which sculpture practice and theory have historically intersected with the decorative. This new methodology presents a more accurate and comprehensive history of sculpture. Its scope is France, 1848-1895, and it offers new conceptual frameworks for understanding art production in this period. Based on extensive research conducted over a 5-year period, it involves a wide range of makers and sources; translation of previously untranslated and unpublished material; and new perspectives on canonical and lesser-known objects and sculptors including Auguste Rodin.
