- This book is the product of seven years’ work. It represents the first city-level study of Tunisia’s primary Islamist movement and offers new arguments about the trajectory of religious politics across the Middle East. The research draws on more than a year of ethnographic fieldwork and hundreds of hours of interviews, translated and transcribed from the original Arabic, as well as an array of primary-source archival material in Arabic, much of it investigated for the first time. This project presented particular ethical and logistical challenges in negotiating access to a political movement emerging from decades of repression.
