- The two editors decided on the contents of both the workshops and the shape of the volume itself, on which they expended equal editorial energy. The submitting author provided a scholarly essay and conclusion, amounting to c. 12,000 words, both based on substantial new research. Contributors were selected from core disciplines especially History, Politics, and Literature. This volume arose from the Carnegie-funded Literature and Union project (2014-16) organised by the editors, involving five public-facing workshops in Glasgow and St Andrews, including participants from over two dozen institutions in the UK. OUP agreed a contract for publication in 2016 on the basis of a prospectus drafted by the editors after the conclusion of the workshops.
