- #noblurredlines is an emergent participatory theatrical event exploring issues surrounding sexual consent. The research aimed to: 1) explore and promote an understanding of key issues surrounding sexual consent, compliance and acquiescence in young people; and 2) use participatory theatre to illicit and sustain dialogue between young people and professionals regarding the ethical, safety and legal implications of sexual intercourse in and outside of relationships, as well as wider issues of respect for self and others, communication and fair play. The research process, scripting and re-scripting of the play included extensive legal input and review from a criminal barrister, workshops with young people, fieldwork with actors and continuous dialogue with young people from ongoing research exploring the mind-set of victims and perpetrators. The interdisciplinary collaboration between Franks and Preece employs socially engaged creative drama techniques and participatory performance to devise, develop and facilitate the project about young people and sexual health. Working on the premise that the personal is universal (Boal, 1979, p.150), #noblurredlines utilises the portrayal of fictional narratives to allow audiences to resonate and respond to a problematic theme whilst by being ‘one-step removed’ (Mountford, Baim and Brookes, 2002, p.30), and therefore ethically safe to explore options and solutions without fear of judgement. Creative outcomes included: a touring participatory theatre performance for young people aged 14-24 (45min); integrated drama workshops to explore the themes raised and iOS app to further engagement and illicit feedback.
