- This book is not long, but it is complex. A stunning telescope was presented to the shogun of Japan in 1613 in the name of King James. This study therefore deals with English history, the history of astronomy (particularly its popular meanings), the rise of trade and creation of the East India Company, and indeed the reception of the instrument in Japan. All the above domains were investigated using original sources, in many languages over more than a decade. and this book uses it to weave a story of English self-fashioning in the early 17th century.
