- This c.80,000 word monograph represents the culmination of an extended research project (over 20 years) that offers a new approach to the challenge of the global in contemporary art. As well as drawing on a number of discourses and disciplines including art theory, philosophical aesthetics and anthropology, this approach is informed by primary research into indigenous Amazonian visual practices and Indian popular traditions. For example, in order to document the little-studied South Indian practice of painting threshold designs, two fieldwork trips to Tamil Nadu were undertaken; interviews were conducted with some 40 practitioners who took part in a specially-arranged competition.
