- This article is part of a journal special issue of 10 essays Oakley-Brown co-edited (as lead editor) entitled Scrutinizing Surfaces in Early Modern Thought. In its examination of the relationships between inanimate and animate matter in early-modern Europe, the special issue argues that surface ontologies are important - yet hitherto neglected - aspects of the premodern material world. In line with the journal’s peer review protocols, the special issue’s individual components (introduction and chapters) were subject to double-blind peer review with the standard accept, revise and resubmit and reject outcomes.
