- Originating as an AHRC-funded doctoral project, this is the first book-length study of the periodical print culture associated with British settler emigration from 1832 to 1877. Arguing for the pervasiveness of settler narratives in the media, Piesse presents original research on an aspect of the Victorian empire through her analysis of a broad range of archival material, along with emigrant voyage texts and serialised fiction depicting settlement. By means of innovative readings of key Victorian writers, Piesse expands knowledge of the periodical form’s representations of the colonial world, and the role of digitisation in Victorian studies.
