- ReFocus: The Films of Sohrab Shahid-Saless: Exiles, Displacement and the Stateless Moving Image (Edinburgh University Press, 2020) is an edited volume by Azadeh Fatehrad. It is the first English language book about Sohrab Shahid Saless (1944-1998), a seminal figure in Iranian New Wave cinema who has been overlooked in diaspora cinema studies. Shadid Saless moved to West Germany in the mid-1970s, where he created an unparalleled body of works for cinema and television that spoke to the traumas of homelessness and displacement. This book explores Saless’ works in Iran, Germany and the US and its implications for issues of creativity in diasporic conditions of urban displacement. As part of her editor role, Fatehrad identified the authors for the book’s different chapters and commissioned an interview between Behrang Samsami with Bert Schmidt. Fatehrad used different methodologies to compile her edited volume such as (1) conducting interviews with scholars, filmmakers and film distributors in Iran, US and Germany in addition to her (2) filed work at Munich Film Museum; convening (3) a day-long conference of international scholars and curators who have studies Saless’ work and curating (4) eleven screening sessions to enable a close study of Saless’s films on a large screen. Fatehrad also authored the book’s introduction and contributed the chapter “The Aesthetic of Diaspora in Moving Image Practice”. As part of the research process Fatehrad collaborated with Nikolaus Perneczky and the Munich Film Museum to curate Sohrab Shahid Saless: Exiles at the Goethe-Institut London. Saless’ films are not digitalised and the rare original copies are difficult to access. The selection of Saless’ works at Munich Film Museum could only be borrowed with diplomatic arrangements via Goethe Institute in London with support from the Visual and Material Culture Research Centre, Iran Heritage Foundation (London) and Arts Council England.
