- Double-weighted statement
- This ground-breaking c.340,000-word volume is the first of its kind: a comprehensive literary history of Wales, covering both languages, in a single volume of 35 chapters. The collection is comprehensive in its chronological scope, from the earliest writing of the sixth century through to the present day, and in its inclusivity, allowing different voices, of early-career as well as established scholars, to present a range of perspectives. The book depended on a complex and extended investigation of Welsh literary history which has resulted in new critical insights into the bilingual culture of Wales.

- Additional information
- This comprehensive literary history of Wales, the first of its kind to cover the literatures of both languages from the earliest writing through to the present day, comprises 35 chapters as well as an Introduction and Afterword. The book is also a ‘first’ in being a literary history of Wales published by a major university press outside Wales. The original idea and design for the book, including the chapter topics and historical summaries at the head of each section, was Fulton’s, who co-opted her co-editor, Geraint Evans (Swansea University), to provide complementary skills and knowledge. She contributed two chapters and co-wrote the Introduction and Afterword (approx 23,000 words out of c. 340,000 words). She shared the initial editorial work with her co-editor 50:50 but was mainly responsible for liaising with 32 contributors, compiling the 65-page Bibliography, and seeing the book through the press, including the copy editing and proof reading (three sets of proofs). The book represents the culmination of Fulton's research specialism in medieval Welsh literature, her interest in the literatures of twentieth-century Wales in both languages (on which she has also published), and her engagement with the cultural politics of Wales before and after devolution.
