- The monograph is based on substantial archive research and analysis carried out over 5 years. Many of the texts discussed have received little or no scholarly attention. The study is interdisciplinary, moving across medical sexology, literature, erotica, journalism and legal and political treatises. It applies an innovative methodological approach to a neglected subject which constitutes an important piece of the history of sexuality (and sexual oppression and discrimination) in Italy. Archive research was conducted at the Central Archive (Rome), the Mondadori publishing archive (Milan), the Sibilla Aleramo archive (Rome), and the Cassero LGBTQ centre (Bologna).
