- This book is based on five years of research, involving a combination of interviews and archival research. It includes both a theoretically informed comparative analysis of four countries and a historical study of the Costa Rican experience over seven decades. The collection of data in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica was particularly time consuming. The legislative debates from the 1940s are only available in paper form so we went over every document one by one. This yielded new theoretical and empirical perspectives.
