- Traditional Power Line Communication (PLC) standards are based on Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) schemes. This paper presents Non-Orthogonal-Multiple-Access (NOMA) for the first time in PLC. NOMA offers higher data-rate, improved fairness among users, and lower electromagnetic compatibility interference (specifically, NOMA requires 4dB less power to achieve the same capacity of 4 bits/Hz when compared with conventional PLC). Hence, better coexistence with wireless systems. The work also presents characteristics of NOMA system in different network scenarios, which chipset manufacturers will find helpful in system design and implementation.
