- On the evening of August 27th, 1916, Romania declared war on the Habsburg Monarchy and invaded Transylvania. In this article, Jan Vermeiren presents new archival sources on the so-called ‘Romanian Question’ and an analysis of the policies of the German Empire and Habsburg Monarchy in the previous two years before the declaration, examining their relationship from both a diplomatic and historical perspective. Vermeiren proposes an original reading of the sources, arguing that it became clear that the Habsburg monarchy was still highly capable of maintaining its freedom of action, despite the increasingly asymmetric relations between the allies.
