- The monograph of 100,000 words innovatively maps the work of contemporary artists in Europe who have rejected the aesthetics of democratization (and its neoliberal associations) in order to explore alternative politics and practices. Research was undertaken between 2007 and 2012 across several continents, comprising archival research as well as interviews with numerous artists, gallerists and curators. Writing took place in 2013-2014, and images (58 colour illustrations; 32 B/W illustrations) sourced in 2014. Gardner's book tells rarely told story of the post-socialist disillusionment not only in the former East but also in the 'democratic' West.
