- The study, and experience, of dementia from an LGBT perspective constitutes a small, but vibrant, world. This cross disciplinary book is the first of its kind to explore issues which are currently underrepresented in research policy and practice in dementia, taking an intersectional perspective with a particular focus on the lived experience.
As co-editor, my contribution has been to synthesise a variety of approaches, theoretical perspectives and experiences into a volume which accurately represents the complexities of issues such as dementia advocacy, human rights in dementia, and the importance of social and community action. The book charts the links between dementia theory, research, social policy and practice, maintaining a focus on the L, the G, the B and the T. Something that much of the work in the sexualities’ field has, to date, failed to do.
I contributed two chapters to the book, one of which uniquely shifts focus in dementia research to argue for a ‘politics of senility’.
The book is structured in three parts, Concepts, Practice and Rights and, in addition to conceptualising the volume and contributing an overall introduction to the volume, I, in tandem with my co-editor, contributed, a critical synthesis by way of introduction to each discrete part of the book.
The book brings together the most pre-eminent academic and lay authors on LGBT* issues in dementia. It is, to date, the only volume which allows for a critical engagement with LGBT issues which are of increasing contemporary social concern.
