- Double-weighted statement
- This submission comprises two full-length graphic novels that were published 2014 and 2020 and represent an extended and multi-layered process of creative investigation. Both graphic novels achieved world-wide distribution and offer two very different approaches to understanding international difference on a human scale. Combined, they give a generous and detailed understanding of cross cultural and inter-racial relationships.

- Additional information
- This double-weighted submission comprises two graphic novels. ‘Just So Happens’ was the first full-length graphic novel written and illustrated by Fumio Obata. It was commissioned by Jonathan Cape (Random House Penguin) and first published in the UK in 2014, with translations into French, Italian, Spanish, Serbian, German and Chinese. The critically acclaimed novel is the account of how a young Japanese woman, who lives and works in Britain, returns home to Japan for her father’s funeral to reassess her relationship with Japanese culture and her family. ‘The Garden’ (2020) was written by Sean Michael Wilson, a British comic-script writer who is based in Japan, and illustrated by Obata, who lives in the UK. It tells the story of a young British woman who creates a garden following a breakdown and a trip to Japan. ‘Just So Happens’ and ‘The Garden’ are very different stylistically as well as in terms of both their creative processes and intended readerships. However, both novels deal with cross-cultural encounters involving Japan and the UK, and how the protagonist of each novel comes to terms with the challenges and opportunities of globalisation.
