- Bonnie Effros is sole author of one chapter: "Two Centuries of Excavating Merovingian-Era Cemeteries in France". She is co-author, with Isabel Moreira, of a substantial introductory chapter entitled: "Pushing the Boundaries of the Merovingian World". The idea for the book was conceived by Bonnie Effros in discussion with an acquisitions editor at Oxford University Press, and Effros then recruited Isabel Moreira as co-editor due to their complementary areas of expertise and long record of collaboration.
The co-editors drew up a list of chapters, identified appropriate contributors from across the career scale and from a very wide range of national perspectives, and provided them with clear guidelines to ensure that each essay provides an overview of the field as well as a snapshot of the latest methodological approaches and research questions. Each served as first editor of half of the contributions, and second reader of the other half. As the pieces passed through their hands, contributors were asked to revise and resubmit them; they each edited them a second time. Many of the essays required extensive corrections as they were not authored by native English speakers; moreover, as four of the archaeological essays were submitted in French, Bonnie Effros translated these pieces for the volume and Isabel Moreira improved her translations. Both editors played an extensive role in checking the accuracy of the copy-editing, read through all of the proofs in detail, and played a hands-on role in supplementing the work done by a paid indexer (with the end result of doubling the original size of the index submitted).
