- Double-weighted statement
- The British Civil Wars at Sea, 1638-1653 is the first comprehensive analysis of the maritime dimension of the civil war period. It is the first work to examine the outbreak, course and significance of the wars at sea from the perspective of each of the sides deploying naval forces during the conflict: Irish confederate, royalist, parliamentarian and Scottish covenanters. Extensive and wide-ranging archival research in English, Dutch and Latin from ten national and international repositories (British Library, Bodleian, Trinity College Dublin, High Court of Admiralty Papers at TNA) and hundreds of printed primary sources (pamphlets and newsletters) underpins this research.

- Additional information
- This book represents a substantial research collaboration between Murphy and Blakemore, necessitated by the volume’s ambitious scope, which is based on extensive archival and printed primary research in wide-ranging archives to reconstruct Irish confederate, royalist, parliamentarian and Scottish covenanters perspectives on the war at sea. Murphy’s contribution to the volume: 1) conceptualised and structured volume with co-author; 2) wrote 3.5 substantial chapters, each the length of a journal article; 3) contributed sections and revised and edited co-author’s chapters; 4) co-authored introduction and conclusion; 5) co-compiled ‘Appendix 1: Timeline of the Civil Wars at Sea, 1638-1653’, ‘Appendix 2: Parliamentarian Fleets, 1642-1649’.
