The Statistical Review of World Energy collects, transforms, reports, and analyses data on global energy markets. The publication provides global coverage of energy production, consumption, and trade. This includes primary energy consumption by country and fuel, carbon dioxide emissions, fossil fuel production and consumption (crude oil, natural gas, and coal), and consumption of renewable energy (including nuclear, wind, and hydroelectricity). This rich dataset and our coverage of key minerals linked to the industry (cobalt, lithium, and graphite) provide one of the most comprehensive yearly snapshots of energy use in the world.
Methodology
Data compilation, management, archiving, visualisation, processing, and analysis all factor into the production of the Statistical Review publication. In our collaboration with BP, our team is exclusively responsible for the compilation, management, archiving, and processing of all data. This involves the use and maintenance of a relational SQL database and programming in multiple languages (Python and Stata). As of 2020, we have recorded and archived nearly two million data points and processed millions of others. As a team, we work closely with BP colleagues on data visualisation and analysis, and provide programming expertise.
Means of Dissemination
The Statistical Review is a prestigious publication used around the world by the public, academics, energy industry, and policymakers. The primary channel of dissemination is the BP website (https://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/energy-economics/statistical-review-of-world-energy.html). This page is among the most visited sites on the company’s website: in 2020, there were roughly 265,000 visits to the Statistical Review page, which was the fourth highest number of page views across the whole corporate website. Heriot-Watt University’s contributions are recognised on the publication, and we also facilitate dissemination of the data and analysis. These include links to outputs that rely on the Statistical Review data which have allowed us to engage with various stakeholders and generate wide impact.
