- Double-weighted statement
- This monograph represents sustained research effort over ten years. The project’s scale necessitated the historical situating of theatre in various national contexts, based on analysis of primary sources in collections across Europe – from national archives (Berlin, Oslo, Prague, Kiev, The Hague) to smaller city archives (e.g. Łódź, Lille, Marburg, Cologne) – and at the Harvard Theatre Collection. Many were difficult to access due to language barriers, different traditions of collecting, and geographical distance. The book’s expansive and complex argument also necessitated detailed, in-depth analysis of the large oeuvre of leading Nazi theatre scholars, undertaken for the first time here.
