- This large body of previously unavailable primary manuscript material in Bentham’s difficult handwriting was identified, transcribed, and edited. The volume selected around 250 from 500 pages to provide a reliable and readable text, ordered according to Bentham’s intentions. Bentham’s many complex allusions—historical, contemporary, classical, literary and Biblical—were annotated, sourced and explained. An Editorial Introduction analyses the genesis of the text as well as the editorial methods employed. The material was indexed by subject and name, with main entries followed by a description incorporating Bentham’s own terminology. The work was copy-edited and proof-read.
