- This work is the only method of making a compact TeV accelerator currently under development. Here we present the world’s first measurement of the modulation of a proton beam travelling in a plasma due to a relativistic ionisation front created by a laser. There has been significant media attention (Nature, the Guardian, New Scientist etc https://www.theguardian.com/science/life-and-physics/2017/jan/08/a-new-cern-experiment-targets-even-higher-energies-eventually, https://www.newscientist.com/article/2178158-cerns-mini-particle-accelerator-could-finally-smash-apart-electrons/) and the collaboration have had invited talks at the main accelerator conference IPAC in 2017 and 2018. AWAKE was supported by STFC grants ST/R002347/1 and Cockcroft Core Grant ST/G008248/1.
