- The book is innovative from a theoretical and methodological perspective, developing approaches based on design theory, with the scope to be applied widely to artefact studies in any period. The book considers how artefacts contribute to our understanding of Roman behaviour and experience, including relationships between producers and users of objects, and discrepant experience according to social identity categories. It is based on extensive data collection and first-hand observation of artefacts at UK and European museums, and includes substantial case studies (which in themselves could form stand-alone articles) that significantly advance the study of the artefact type in question.
